Board committee clears $189,494 Parks Alliance gift for trails and mobile recreation

The Budget & Finance Committee voted Feb. 6 to forward a Recreation & Parks resolution to the full Board to accept and expend a $189,494.24 gift from the San Francisco Parks Trust (now Parks Alliance), funded through Coca‑Cola Refreshments, to support urban‑trail construction, signage and the department’s mobile recreation program.
Lisa Branson, Director of Partnerships for Recreation & Parks, said the grant package includes in‑kind donations valued at $94,635 (a mobile rock‑climbing wall, 12 kayaks, 20 mountain bikes and a pickup truck), approximately $42,000 in signage donated in kind, $2,859.24 for design services and a $50,000 cash grant for trail construction in the Oak Woodlands area of Golden Gate Park. Branson said staff estimate the mobile recreation equipment will support roughly 50 site visits during the school year and that nearly 1,200 youth have used the rock wall so far this year.
Supervisor John Avalos asked whether any advertising obligations to Coca‑Cola were required; Branson replied that the sponsor did not require advertising. Public comment included area residents and volunteer stewards who described years of volunteer work on the Oak Woodlands trail and praised the partnership between the department, Parks Alliance and community groups. Chair Farrell moved to forward the item to the full Board with recommendation; the motion carried without objection.
