Committee backs ban on retail workspaces in Chinatown mixed‑use districts

The Land Use and Transportation Committee voted March 22, 2021, to forward an ordinance that would prohibit retail workspaces in Chinatown mixed‑use districts and to give it a positive recommendation to the full Board of Supervisors.
Laurel Arvanovides of the Mayor's Office of Economic and Workforce Development told the committee the legislation "was developed in partnership with the Chinatown community" and aims to protect the district's role as a visitor attraction while maintaining a clear separation from the broader downtown commercial district. She said the proposal responds to community concerns raised during the Proposition H ballot process.
Veronica Flores, a Planning Department staffer, told the committee the item went before the Planning Commission on Feb. 18 and that the commission "unanimously recommended approval of said ordinance." There were no callers on the public comment line on this item.
Supervisor Aaron Peskin moved the measure; the clerk called the roll and the committee recorded three ayes. The committee passed the item out of committee with a positive recommendation to the Board of Supervisors.
Next steps: the ordinance will proceed through the Board process following the committee recommendation.
