Committee adopts Treasure Island street-naming framework drawing on 1939 exposition

The Land Use and Transportation Committee on Jan. 25 recommended that the Board adopt a street-naming framework for Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island that draws on the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition for place names, artists and architects.
Bob Beck of the Treasure Island Development Authority told the committee the naming convention was developed beginning in 2015 in coordination with the Treasure Island Museum and the project’s master developer. Beck said the framework uses avenues for major arterials (examples: Clipper Cove Avenue, 7 Seas Avenue, Avenue of the Palms), identifies shared public ways intended for bikes and pedestrians (e.g., Siesta Way, Garden Walk), and arranges names alphabetically to aid wayfinding.
Beck said the proposed names were reviewed with Public Works to avoid duplication with existing San Francisco street names and that the draft framework reflects names and places drawn from the exposition’s courts, gardens and artists. No public commenters were queued for this item.
Committee members moved the item forward with a positive recommendation. After an initial vote staff requested a substitution to correct misspellings in the resolution and exhibit; the committee rescinded and approved the amended language and then passed the amended motion, with the clerk recording unanimous ayes for the final recommendation to the full Board.
