Committee forwards $714,138 victim-compensation joint-powers grant for DA victim services

The Budget and Finance Committee recommended that the Board of Supervisors accept up to $714,138 allocated from the California Victim Compensation and Government Claims Board for a joint-powers arrangement supporting victim services at the District Attorney’s Office.
Maria B., Chief of Victim Services, said the recurring grant has supported the program for 13 to 14 years and currently supports seven staff who review victim compensation applications, analyze bills for eligibility under state guidelines and administer benefits for eligible victims. She said eligible crimes under the program are generally crimes of violence and that benefits can include medical, dental, relocation, crime-scene cleanup, funeral/burial and mental-health counseling.
Maria B. reported that, in fiscal year 2010–11, the office received about 1,137 applications from San Francisco crime victims and paid out about $2,337,570 in benefits.
There was no public comment; the committee moved the resolution forward with recommendation without objection.
