Rules Committee advances Azalina Yousso nomination for Sanitation and Streets Commission to full Board

Supervisor Matt Dorsey, chair of the Rules Committee of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, moved Dec. 11 to advance the mayor’s nomination of Azalina Yousso for Seat 5 on the Sanitation and Streets Commission to the full Board.

The committee heard a brief statement from Yousso, who said she has been a San Francisco resident for 21 years and has run her business for 12 years in the Tenderloin. "By working and giving back right now to San Francisco, it's always about collective effort," she said, describing a focus on sanitation and neighborhood cleanliness.

Public comment included endorsements from several neighborhood and business representatives who described Yousso’s local engagement. Prativa Teke of the Tenderloin Housing Clinic said Yousso "is not shying away from tough decisions" and praised her efforts on cleanliness. Lorraine Lewis of New Community Leadership Foundation said Yousso is "fearless" and experienced in small-business operations; Jamie Flanagan of the Phoenix Hotel and other business owners offered similar support.

After public comment, Chair Dorsey moved to strike the word 'reject' from the committee motion and forward the nomination to the full Board. In the roll call, Vice Chair Shimon Walton voted "Aye," Supervisor Safaie was recorded as absent, and Chair Dorsey voted "Aye." The motion passed and the nomination will be considered by the full Board.

The committee did not conduct a substantive Q&A on policy details of the commission appointment; the next step is a full Board hearing and potential confirmation vote.
