The Budget and Finance Committee voted to recommend that the Board of Supervisors accept and expend $399,442 from the California Department of Justice for a foreclosure crisis recovery program at the District Attorney’s Office.
Conrad Del Rosario, managing attorney in the Economic Crimes Unit, said the grant—offered following an attorney general settlement with Countrywide—will fund a specialized prosecutor and investigator to pursue mortgage fraud and related crimes. “This grant specifically enables our office to create a very specialized unit,” Del Rosario said.
Del Rosario described recent cases, including what he said was a roughly $2,200,000 fraud scheme involving false deeds intended to steal property, and loan-modification scams that targeted the Hispanic community. He said the office has position authority to fill three positions and intends to use the grant to fund an attorney, an investigator and a paralegal rather than create new permanent slots.
