Committee initiates landmark review for Ingleside Terraces Sundial Park

The Land Use and Transportation Committee on Dec. 7 voted to initiate landmark designation under Article 10 of the Planning Code for the Ingleside Terraces Sundial and Sundial Park in District 7.
Jen Lowe, staff to Supervisor Norman Yee, presented the item and introduced Woody LaBounty of San Francisco Heritage, who provided a short historical tour: the residential park was created beginning in 1911, the circular Sundial Park was landscaped with a 34-foot-diameter sundial and a 28-foot gnomon, and the site has served as a neighborhood gathering place for more than a century.
‘‘Sundial Park has been appreciated and enjoyed by generations of Ingleside Terraces residents,’’ LaBounty said. Longtime residents who called in during public comment confirmed details about the dial’s construction and an earlier plaque that was reportedly removed in the 1930s. A late technical correction was also offered to strike language that the park’s columns align with true cardinal directions (staff and residents said the columns are positioned about 45 degrees off cardinal north), and the committee accepted that factual amendment.
Supervisors Peskin, Safaei and Preston all affixed their names as cosponsors. The committee voted to send the initiation of landmark designation, as amended, to the full Board with recommendation (3-0).
