Committee advances 3‑year pay agreement for UCSF interns and residents at San Francisco General

Mary Howe of the Department of Human Resources presented a three‑year memorandum of understanding between the City and the interns and residents who rotate through San Francisco General Hospital, saying the agreement runs through June 2014 and will align those trainees' wages with what they earn while at UCSF. "We agreed that the wages of the interns and residents while they rotate through San Francisco General will be the same as they make while they are at UCSF," Howe said.
Chair David Campos and other supervisors opened the item for public comment. Douglas Yap, a former San Francisco General employee who said he worked at the hospital for 20 years, praised the mayor for sponsoring the measure and urged approval, noting press coverage that he said estimated a "few extra million dollars per year" in costs to the City and County of San Francisco to implement the agreement.
Supervisors indicated they had no objections and took the motion to forward the item to the full Board on the consent calendar. According to the committee clerk, items acted upon at this meeting will appear on the June 7 Board of Supervisors agenda unless otherwise stated.
The committee record shows staff and supervisors framed the agreement as restoring parity with UCSF pay scales for trainees at San Francisco General; the motion to forward was taken without objection and will be considered by the full Board.
