Sponsor Supervisor Rafael Mandelman said Lyon and Martin — co‑founders of the Daughters of Bilitis and among San Francisco’s most prominent LGBTQ rights pioneers — lived at the property for decades and the house served as a meeting place for organizing and community gatherings. Mandelman noted the home recently sold and urged the city to begin the Article 10 landmark initiation process, which triggers Planning Department review and a Historic Preservation Commission recommendation.
Speakers from San Francisco Heritage and the GLBT Historical Society called in to support initiation and noted national and international significance, including a letter from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The committee voted to send the initiation to the full Board with a positive committee recommendation so the landmark process can proceed.
