Committee advances floodplain code updates to align with federal FEMA maps

The Land Use and Transportation Committee on Oct. 19 recommended that the Board adopt administrative‑code changes to update San Francisco’s floodplain management standards to conform to FEMA’s current Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM).
Bill Barnes of the City Administrator’s office told the committee that FEMA issued the final FIRM on Sept. 23 and that local adoption is necessary for continued compliance with the National Flood Insurance Program. The proposed ordinance adds a clarified definition of “historic structure” to align with state and federal inventories and deletes a redundant definition of “regulatory floodway.” Deputy City Attorney Anne Pearson said the listed edits are non‑substantive.
No public speakers were queued on the item. Chair Peskin moved the textual amendments and the motion passed by roll call with committee members recording 'aye.' The amendments will be forwarded to the full Board for consideration.
