Committee Endorses Temporary Continuance of El Capitan Theater Parking Lot

Supervisor Hillary Ronan described the El Capitan Theater and Hotel at 2351 Mission Street as an "extraordinary landmark" whose façade remains intact even though the interior theater is gone and a parking lot now occupies the site. She argued that extending the temporary use of the parking lot would avoid neighborhood blight and help small businesses during the pandemic.
Veronica Flores of the Department of City Planning told the committee that both the Historic Preservation Commission and the Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval. There were no callers in the public comment queue on the item.
The committee voted to forward the ordinance (file number 200421) to the full Board with a recommendation for approval. Roll call recorded three ayes from the members present (Preston, Safaei, Peskin).
Next steps: The matter will appear on the Board of Supervisors agenda for its consideration as the committee’s recommendation is transmitted.
