Committee reenacts emergency rent-increase prohibition for 60 days amid COVID-19

The Land Use and Transportation Committee on July 6 recommended that the Board reenact Emergency Ordinance No. 6-20 to temporarily prohibit rent increases that would otherwise be permitted under the Administrative Code because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Chair Aaron Peskin said the emergency legislation lasts 60 days and was expiring June 23; reenactment would extend the prohibition on certain rent increases for another 60 days during the COVID-19 period. Peskin said the ordinance had previously been approved unanimously by the Board of Supervisors.
Supervisor Dean Preston asked to be added as a co-sponsor, noting he was on the original legislation; Supervisor Asha Safai agreed to be added as a co-sponsor. There were no callers for public comment on the item during the remote meeting.
Chair Peskin moved to send the reenactment to the full Board for a hearing on July 7. The clerk called the roll and Supervisors Preston, Safai and Peskin each voted "aye," producing a unanimous committee recommendation. The committee then adjourned.
