Rules Committee approves resolution, with amendments, to allow limited use of city seal on supervisor jackets

The Rules Committee on Monday advanced to the full Board a resolution authorizing the limited use of the city corporate seal on jackets for Supervisor Matt Dorsey and his District 6 staff, approving amendments to substitute the word "separation" for "termination" and to set the end date of the authorization to noon on Jan. 8, 2027.

Chair Dorsey said the jackets—which would display the city seal and identify staff as Board of Supervisors staff representing District 6—would help make supervisors and staff more visible at community events. "I think it's more important than ever that we should be a visible representation of the city we serve," he said.

Angela Calvillo, the clerk of the Board, explained Administrative Code section 1.6 makes the clerk the custodian of the seal and noted considerations including liability if a jacket-wearer is injured while performing duties, process for returning seals and garments when someone separates from service, and adherence to the Board’s style guide. "When there are requests to utilize the city seal ... the clerk of the board is authorized to provide approval upon review of the look and feel," Calvillo said.

Public testimony included in‑room support and a phone comment from David Pilpelt, who suggested wording changes (replace "termination" with "separation") and recommended changing the authorization’s end date so it did not appear electoral in nature; Pilpelt suggested Jan. 8, 2027. The committee adopted those adjustments and voted to forward the resolution to the full Board with a positive recommendation; Supervisor Safaee was recorded as absent for parts of the vote.

The resolution will go to the full Board for final consideration; the clerk’s office will handle custody and style considerations before any garments are produced.
