Committee moves San Francisco fire‑code overhaul to Board after Fire Marshal report

The committee heard a presentation from Fire Marshal Dan D'Casio on an ordinance that would repeal the existing San Francisco Fire Code and enact a new code consistent with the 2019 California Fire Code.
D'Casio said the proposed local fire code largely rolls over provisions from the 2016 San Francisco Fire Code but includes a handful of changes. He highlighted renumbering of sections (including the fee schedule), the addition of fees tied to the administrative hearing process to recoup administrative costs, explicit credential requirements for persons performing work on fire‑alarm and sprinkler systems, clarifications on what constitutes an obstruction to access to fire escapes (including locked doors and rooms), and a new requirement that building owners provide documentation that a fire escape has been inspected and certified within the last five years upon request of the fire code official.
With no public comment, the committee agreed to send item 7 to the full Board with recommendation as a committee report for an Oct. 29 hearing.
