Chair Carmen Chu presented the proposal, which would waive fees for awning replacements and pedestrian-level lighting during the city—s designated Small Business Month and apply to businesses with 100 or fewer employees. The item was supported by Nicole Agbayani (Excelsior Action Group), Chris Shulman (Office of Small Business), and Bill Strawn (Department of Building Inspection). Agbayani said corridor managers had identified storefront appearance as a community priority and estimated 13 businesses in the Excelsior corridor would directly benefit. The committee noted the fiscal impact would be modest; DBI reported May awning-permit revenue averaged $12,000—$15,000 in recent years.
The committee voted to forward the ordinance to the full Board with recommendation.
