Committee advances Blue Bottle permit in Jackson Square to pilot reusable-cup model

The Land Use and Transportation Committee advanced an ordinance Jan. 27 that would allow a Blue Bottle cafe to open at 909 Montgomery Street in the Jackson Square Special Use District and pilot a reusable-cup, zero-waste business model.
Chair Aaron Peskin said the cafe submitted building-permit applications in July 2018 and that the proposal is a small, trailing change to prior legislation affecting the Jackson Square Historic District. Brian Meehan, Blue Bottle’s CEO, told the committee: “we are gonna use this location ... to test converting use of the disposable cup with a reusable cup.” Meehan said the test is the company’s first in San Francisco and has already drawn global attention.
Peskin thanked planning staff and the Planning Commission for waiving the commission’s hearing so the item could move more quickly. No members of the public objected during the committee’s public-comment period.
The committee closed public comment and, with no objections from committee members, agreed to forward the ordinance to the full Board of Supervisors with a committee recommendation.
The full Board will consider the ordinance at a future meeting; the committee record indicates the item will appear on the Board agenda on Feb. 4 unless otherwise stated.
