Committee backs sidewalk-width amendment to add ADA passenger loading at Maxine Hall Health Center

Chair Aaron Peskin said the committee would consider an ordinance to reduce the official sidewalk width on the westerly side of Pierce Street in front of Maxine Hall Health Center, 1301 Pierce Street. Kevin Jensen, disability access coordinator for Public Works, presented drawings showing an indented, street-level passenger loading aisle adjacent to the vehicle pull-up space and said the change would create an ADA-compliant passenger loading zone.
Jensen told the committee the design includes curb ramps and corrects an existing cross slope; he said the official legislative sidewalk width is 15 feet but that the proposed passenger loading arrangement "doesn't effectively reduce the pedestrian throughway zone in the sidewalk" and is consistent with the Better Streets plan because pedestrian capacity is unaffected.
No members of the public testified on the item. With no committee objections, Chair Peskin said the committee would send the ordinance to the full Board with a recommendation and that it would be scheduled for the January 2020 Board of Supervisors agenda.
The item will be considered at the full Board; the committee recorded the request and accompanying design exhibits from Public Works for the record.
