SAN FRANCISCO — The committee briefly took up a proposed resolution (agenda item 2) declaring a state of emergency over pedestrian and cyclist fatalities, but supervisors deferred final action and continued the item to the call of the chair while allowing extended public comment.
Clerk and Supervisor Haney introduced the item and indicated it would be continued; the meeting nonetheless heard multiple residents, neighborhood advocates and service providers who described traffic danger and urged immediate measures in high-risk neighborhoods — especially the Tenderloin. Requests included installing speed bumps, pedestrian scrambles at key intersections, longer crossing times to accommodate seniors and people with disabilities, more traffic enforcement and camera deployment, and additional crossing-guard hours funded quickly.
Speakers gave specific local examples of serious incidents and argued that slower, safer streets and funded staffing (crossing guards and enforcement) could be implemented quickly while longer-term street redesigns proceed. The committee took the hearing record and will revisit the resolution at a subsequent date.
