Committee backs consolidation of business‑license renewals to a single March 31 cycle
Summary
The committee recommended an ordinance to consolidate business‑license renewals so businesses receive a single annual bill (March 31) regardless of number of locations; the Treasurer/Tax Collector said the change will simplify compliance, allow online payments and require follow‑up legislation and technical work, with rollout expected through 2013.

The Budget & Finance Committee recommended forwarding an ordinance that consolidates business‑license renewals and establishes March 31 as the unified annual renewal date for licenses administered by the Treasurer‑Tax Collector’s Office.
Craig Cato of the Treasurer/Tax Collector’s Office explained the consolidation will allow a single bill per business owner instead of multiple location‑based bills spread through the year. He described outreach to regulatory departments, merchant associations and the Small Business Commission, and said the first consolidated bills would be mailed for March 31 of the following year with a full rollout in 2013. The Treasurer’s Office noted work remains — additional legislation and IT changes — and described options such as prepayment and online payments to address business cash‑flow concerns.
Representatives from the Small Business Commission and the Office of Small Business spoke in support, and supervisors praised the proposal as helpful to small businesses. The committee moved the item forward with unanimous support.
