Committee backs acceptance of Trust for Public Land gift to support Glen Canyon Park improvements

The Budget and Finance Committee voted to forward a resolution that would allow the Recreation and Parks Department to accept and expand a gift-in-place valued up to $483,250 from the Trust for Public Land to support the Glen Canyon Park Improvement Plan and community outreach.
Karen Moni Bridal of Recreation and Parks described an extensive outreach process that included trail walks, focus groups, online surveys and eight-plus community workshops. She said the Trust for Public Land’s assistance, together with funding from the Coastal Conservancy, enabled broader community engagement and allowed bond funds to be used more directly for physical improvements.
“By Trust for Public Land bringing in these funds, we were able to preserve more of those funds to go into the physical improvements to the site, instead of spending a lot of funds on the outreach,” Bridal said.
Bridal outlined planned work supported by the city’s $5.8 million Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond funding, including a larger new playground to replace pressure-treated lumber structures, relocation of tennis courts, improved park access and exterior restrooms for the gym. Staff said some long-term improvements were identified but are not yet funded; the current bond pays for the front portion of the park and certain trail work.
Trust for Public Land staff in the room praised the partnership. There was no public comment on the item and the committee approved forwarding the resolution with recommendation.
