The Government Audit and Oversight Committee of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors on July 14 heard sharp criticism of Pacific Gas and Electric's planned smart-meter deployment and directed City departments to take part in the pending California Public Utilities Commission review and to perform a city-led cost-and-climate analysis.
Chair Supervisor Aaron Peskin opened the hearing by saying the ordinance before the committee would require the Department of the Environment and local PUC to review PG&E's upgrade proposal and that, after such a review, "if indeed the upgrade proposal was not cost effective, that it would be the city's policy to oppose Pacific Gas and Electric's proposal." Peskin noted CPUC approval already covers roughly $1.7 billion in installations and said PG&E is seeking additional funding.
