Committee accepts Department of the Environment budget recommendations

The committee approved the budget analyst's recommendations for the Department of the Environment, which will have a proposed operating budget of roughly $17.1 million for fiscal 2011–12, department director Melanie Nutter said. The increase is driven chiefly by new and existing grants, refuse rates, and fees for service; the department has not requested general-fund support since 2003, Nutter said.
Nutter listed a set of grants included in the budget, including a $250,000 CDC grant for indoor air quality work, $105,000 from the Department of Energy for alternative-fuel vehicle projects, and a $250,000 grant to develop a 100-percent-renewable-energy blueprint for the city. The committee approved the recommended reductions and technical adjustments summarized by the budget analyst without objection and moved the items forward.
