Committee backs baseline assessment for Good Food Purchasing in hospitals and jails

The committee advanced a resolution asking the San Francisco Department of Public Health and the Sheriff's Department to undertake baseline assessments of their food vendors against the Good Food Purchasing Program (GFPP) standards.
Supervisor Jane Feuer (co‑sponsor) introduced the measure and Alexa Delwiche of the Center for Good Food Purchasing described the program’s five values—animal welfare, nutrition, valued workforce, environmental sustainability and local economies—and gave national examples, including Los Angeles and other school districts and cities that have used GFPP to reallocate spending toward higher‑welfare products without raising overall costs.
Delwiche said the Center is already engaged with DPH on baseline work for Zuckerberg General Hospital and Laguna Honda and noted the sheriff's RFP includes GFPP requirements. Public commenters from NRDC, SPUR, Farm Forward, legal advocates and public‑health professionals urged adoption and highlighted labor and environmental benefits.
The committee moved the resolution forward with a positive recommendation to the full Board without objection.
