Committee backs extension to 98 Bottles' liquor license on Turk Street

The Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee recommended Sept. 12 that the Board of Supervisors consider an extension of the Type-48 on-sale general public premises liquor license for 98 Bottles of Beer on the Wall, Inc., allowing the business at 98 Turk Street to include the adjacent 94 Turk Street space and to sell beer, wine and distilled spirits if approved.

Sgt. George of the San Francisco Police Department's Alcohol Liaison Unit said the proposed extension would place the license within Plot 176, a high-crime area, and in Census Tract 125.01, a high-saturation area. The department recommended several conditions, which the applicant agreed to: no off-premises sales; active monitoring of adjacent public areas to prevent loitering; keeping adjacent sidewalks free of litter; noise limitations so no noise is audible at nearby residences; and removal of graffiti within 72 hours.

Applicant Pete Glickstern described operating at the Turk and Taylor corner for about two years, said the business helps activate the corner during evening hours, and noted they already maintain the sidewalk and pick up trash. Michael Nolte, speaking for neighborhood interests, showed a photograph suggesting the applicant's ABC posting originally omitted a date and urged more consistent outreach for alcohol and entertainment permits in the Tenderloin.

A committee member moved to forward the item with a resolution finding that the public convenience or necessity would be served; the motion was taken without objection and the item will appear on the Board agenda on Sept. 18, 2018.
