Committee forwards Proposition 36 county plan resolution after staff presentation

The Government Audit and Oversight Committee voted to forward to the full Board of Supervisors a resolution authorizing San Francisco’s County Plan submission under the Substance Abuse and Crime Prevention Act (Proposition 36) for fiscal year 2007–08.
Craig Murdock of the Department of Public Health Community Behavioral Health Services presented the plan to the committee and described it as the department’s annual submission to the State Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs to support ongoing operation of Proposition 36. He told the committee that last fiscal year the program served 310 defendants in San Francisco’s criminal justice system and that the department projects serving roughly the same number this fiscal year.
Murdock explained Proposition 36 is a diversion program that allows eligible offenders access to community-based services in lieu of incarceration. With no public comment, the committee closed the hearing and, without objection, forwarded the resolution to the full board with a favorable recommendation.
