The Land Use & Transportation Committee on March 19 voted to advance an ordinance that would amend the building code to create an expedited, streamlined permit process for rooftop and site solar energy systems.
Chair Aaron Peskin thanked former Supervisor Katie Tang for initiating the work and presented amendments (pages 5–8) clarifying that the expedited process would not apply to historic resources. Bill Strahan of the Department of Building Inspection told the committee the ordinance would codify a longstanding DBI practice and align local rules with a state law requiring jurisdictions to expedite solar permits.
No public comment was offered on the item, and the committee sent the ordinance to the full Board of Supervisors with a positive recommendation.
If approved by the Board, the change would create a clearer, codified process for approving solar permits while leaving state and local historic-protection rules intact.
