Committee forwards ordinance to expedite commemorative plaque for Hillcrest Elementary student Selena Lam

The Land Use and Transportation Committee on Feb. 11 voted to forward to the full Board an ordinance to waive permit and inspection fees and expedite installation of a commemorative street plaque honoring Selena Lam, a third‑grade student at Hillcrest Elementary who died last year.
Carolyn Goosen, presenting for the ordinance sponsor, said the legislation expedites plaque approval and installation, authorizes Public Works to maintain and repair the plaque after installation, waives the usual Public Works hearing for the plaque, and allows the city to accept the plaque as a gift so the city can assume maintenance and liability. Public Works’ Jeremy Spitz said his department supports the ordinance and has been working with the applicant on installation and location.
Gabby (Hillcrest school social worker) thanked the committee and the Hillcrest community for support and described the plaque and an adjacent memorial tree as important to the school community’s grieving process. Supervisor Haney moved the amendments; the committee accepted them, forwarded the ordinance to the full Board with recommendation as amended, and adjourned.
