The Land Use Committee heard a six-month report on the Mission Interim Controls Area on July 30. Diego Sanchez of the Planning Department summarized background and outreach: the interim controls (in effect since January) require conditional-use authorization for any new restaurant serving alcohol and for commercial storefront mergers that create 2,000 gross square feet or more.
Sanchez said the interim controls aim to prevent a rapid increase in alcohol-serving restaurants from crowding out neighborhood-serving uses and to preserve smaller storefronts that support cultural and economic diversity. He described engagement with a broad set of stakeholders including merchant groups and neighborhood associations and a community meeting at the Women's Building.
After the presentation the committee moved to file the report. Planning staff said a set of proposed permanent land-use controls informed by this outreach will be introduced soon.
