Committee moves forward ordinance to prohibit cannabis dispensaries in Chinatown mixed‑use districts

An ordinance that would prohibit cannabis retail and medical dispensaries in Chinatown mixed‑use districts moved forward from the Land Use Committee on July 16.
Sponsor Supervisor Aaron Peskin said the amendment responds to community concerns about gentrification and rising rents in Chinatown and noted his intention to respect the district supervisor’s preference. Planning staff reported the Planning Commission voted to disapprove the ordinance on June 14; staff advised that the Board must nevertheless make its own general plan consistency findings.
No members of the public spoke at the committee hearing on this item. Supervisor Peskin and several colleagues indicated they would move the ordinance forward. The committee voted to send the item to the full Board with a positive recommendation and indicated the office of the city attorney will work on the necessary plan consistency findings prior to Board action.
