The Land Use Committee on July 16 recommended that the Board of Supervisors designate 6301 Third Street, the Arthur H. Coleman Medical Center, as a historic landmark.
Desiree Smith of the Planning Department summarized the Historic Preservation Commission’s unanimous recommendation to designate the building. Staff said the property is significant for its association with Dr. Arthur H. Coleman, who established a medical practice in Bayview‑Hunters Point in 1948 and provided culturally competent, comprehensive health services to an underserved community. The department noted the building’s architectural significance and its role in the community health‑center movement.
Public commenters included clinic staff, family members and community leaders who described Coleman’s service to the neighborhood and urged preservation of the building as a community asset. Jason Finch (New South Parking), Pat Coleman (relative), Marlena Watkins (Bayview resident) and Patty Rodriguez (chief operating officer, Bayview Hunters Point Clinic) testified in support.
The committee moved the item forward to the full Board with a positive recommendation without objection.
