The Rules Committee voted to send to the full Board an amended motion establishing a new permanent Youth, Young Adults and Families committee within the Board of Supervisors. Chief author Supervisor Ahsha Safaí Ronan (appears in the transcript as Supervisor Ronan) described the committee as a forum for legislation and fiscal items affecting children, youth and families and said it would work closely with the Youth Commission, First 5 and DCYF.
Ronan withdrew language that would have given the new committee jurisdiction over ballot measures and charter amendments after consultation with the clerk to avoid overloading staff and to respect timing constraints. The Youth Commission provided public comment supporting joint hearings, a standing item for youth input and efforts to hold hearings at youth-accessible times.
Supervisor Connie Chan co-sponsored the motion and praised the amendments. The committee voted to adopt the amendments and to forward the item to the full Board with a positive recommendation (Mandelmann, Chan, Peskin 'Aye'). The item will appear on the Board calendar for final action.
