The Budget and Finance Committee approved releasing $75,000 in Port Commission reserves to fund youth‑employment and workforce development programs administered by the Port of San Francisco.
Elaine Forbes of the Port requested $39,840 now to fund the Earth Stewards Apprenticeship and the Maritime Industry Immersion internship; she explained the port’s workforce programs began in 2005 and have expanded in collaboration with the San Francisco Conservation Corps and other partners. The remaining $35,160 would be used for needed repair and replacement projects at the port.
Budget analyst Mr. Rose recommended releasing the entire $75,000, noting additional port needs related to the America’s Cup. Catherine Snead (Garden Project) and Janet Gomes (San Francisco Conservation Corps) described recruitment channels, participant numbers and program impacts; multiple program participants and community members spoke in strong support of the Earth Stewards program, citing job skills, stability and community benefits.
The committee approved the release without objection and thanked program staff and participants for attending.
