Rules Committee backs expanding American Indian Cultural District to include Dolores Park

The Rules Committee recommended to the full Board an ordinance to expand the American Indian Cultural District to include Dolores Park and to add further cultural and historic findings for the district. The committee voted to send the item to the Board as a committee report without objection.
Shereeya Souza, executive director of the American Indian Cultural District, called the inclusion of Dolores Park “an honor” and urged supervisors to protect the site and those who use it. Debbie Santiago, identifying herself with a Nevada/California tribe and as a longtime San Francisco resident, said Mission Dolores and surrounding areas are part of the history and heritage of local Indigenous people and urged approval.
After public comment closed, a committee member moved to forward the ordinance to the full Board with a positive recommendation as a committee report; the motion passed unanimously. The committee record shows the item was continued from a prior meeting and that staff and advocates worked on the language to add Dolores Park.
The matter will next go before the full Board of Supervisors for final action.
