Rules Committee advances five City Hall Preservation Commission nominees to full board

The Rules Committee unanimously moved on Nov. 16 to forward five mayoral reappointments and appointments to the City Hall Preservation Advisory Commission to the full Board of Supervisors with positive recommendations.

Ellen Schumer, a current commissioner, said the commission has worked to preserve City Hall’s historical significance while the building remains closed and expects to play a role in reopening plans. "The commission has worked over the years to maintain the historical significance of the building," she said.

Robert Vergara, a history teacher at St. Ignatius High School, said his background teaching San Francisco history and leading tours would help the commission with public education and fundraising, and noted the dome resurfacing project on the horizon. James Haas, a reappointment candidate, noted outstanding maintenance issues including dome windows and said the commission seeks to keep the building in excellent shape.

Supervisor Marr moved to approve items 4 through 8, removing the word "rejecting" from the legislation and forwarding the nominations to the full board with a positive recommendation. The committee conducted a roll call; Supervisors Stephanie and Maher and Chair Ronan voted aye and the motion passed without objection.
