Rules Committee adopts technical changes for Public Advocate charter, continues sheriff oversight to July 9
Summary
On July 6 the Rules Committee adopted conforming language setting the initial Public Advocate election for Nov. 8, 2022 (two‑year initial term) and continued a sheriff oversight charter measure to July 9. The sanitation proposal advanced on sponsor amendments and was continued for further drafting.
The Rules Committee adopted conforming amendments to a separate charter item that would create an elected Office of Public Advocate and set the initial election and term length.
City Attorney Stella Ann Pearson presented language clarifying that the initial election for the Public Advocate would be held on Nov. 8, 2022, for a two‑year term beginning Jan. 8, 2023; thereafter the office would appear on the 2024 general municipal election schedule and every fourth year. The committee adopted the amendments without objection by recorded vote (Stephanie: aye; Mar: aye; Ronan: aye).
Separately, the committee continued a charter amendment to create a Sheriff’s Department oversight board and an Office of Inspector General to its July 9 Rules Committee meeting at Supervisor Walton’s request. The committee recorded the continuance vote as unanimous among the members present.
The chair adjourned the meeting after the clerk confirmed the agenda was complete.
