Rules Committee tables proposed public health emergency leave ordinance

Supervisor Gordon Marr introduced an initiative ordinance to be placed on the Nov. 3, 2020 ballot that would codify public health emergency leave into the police code and extend two additional weeks of fully paid leave to workers during future public health emergencies or unhealthy air‑quality days. Marr told the committee the policy began as emergency legislation earlier in the year and “offers 2 additional weeks of fully paid leave to over 200,000 San Franciscans.”
The committee did not take up the measure for recommendation. After Marr moved to “file” the item, the clerk clarified the motion as to “table and file” the matter. A roll call vote recorded Supervisors Catherine Stephanie, Gordon Marr and Chair Hillary Ronan voting aye. The committee tabled the item.
The vote means the measure can be reintroduced or pursued through the supervisor who filed the initiative; Marr said he intended to file the initiative contemporaneously with the committee hearing. No amendments or policy changes were advanced at the Rules Committee; the sponsor said the filing preserves the benefit while further legislative work continues.
