Committee recommends Type 64 theater liquor license for San Francisco Opera to full board

Michael Simpson, chief financial officer of the San Francisco Opera, told the committee the organization had built out a 300‑seat theater in the former SFMOMA sculpture garden as part of seismic and building improvements and said the Opera seeks the license to help offer a fuller audience experience that includes beverages. Simpson said the Opera had complied with neighborhood notifications and intended to follow ABC/ALU rules and security requirements.
ALU’s recommended conditions included permitted service hours from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m.; limiting sales and service to bona fide ticketed theater performances (the license should be used only when performers are present); restricting service to stationary/portable bars and server service (no ambulatory vendors); prohibiting off‑premise sales; limiting alcohol to no more than two beverages per person per event; requiring containers that are clearly distinguishable from nonalcoholic beverages; and assigning employees/security to ensure alcohol remains inside permitted areas.
After brief public comment and the Opera presentation, the committee moved and approved a recommendation to forward the Type 64 application to the full Board without opposition.
