Committee approves city's HUD Continuum of Care application seeking about $18.2M

The Budget & Finance Committee on Oct. 19 recommended that the Board of Supervisors approve the City and County of San Francisco’s 2010 HUD Continuum of Care (McKinney) grant application.
Ally Schlager of the Human Services Agency, staff to the local homeless coordinating board, said the application will seek approximately $18.2 million to fund 51 renewal projects and one new permanent‑housing project (just over $1 million). HUD’s Notice of Funding Availability opened Sept. 20 and applications are due Nov. 18; staff said the New Project category is competitive and HUD suggested preference for projects serving homeless veterans.
Supervisor questions focused on veteran homelessness data; Schlager said the 2009 street count showed about 18% of respondents identified as veterans and noted that the VA regional director sits on the local coordinating board and that VA staff are contributing data to the Homeless Management Information System. Public testimony included partner organizations and advocates; the committee agreed to forward the resolution with recommendation.
