Committee endorses landmark nomination for 2731–2735 Folsom Street

The Transportation Committee heard a planning‑department presentation and unanimously advanced a community‑sponsored landmark nomination for the building at 2731–2735 Folsom Street.
Shannon Ferguson of the Planning Department presented the nomination, describing the building — referred to in the staff report as the Goughran House — as a circa‑1900 apartment building significant for its association with the Mission District’s growth as a street‑car suburb and for its architect, James Francis Dunn. The department noted characteristic Dunn features — rusticated ground floor, tripartite composition, molded surrounds and exuberant ornamentation — and said the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) initiated the designation process on March 15, 2017 and unanimously recommended landmark status on July 19, 2017.
Ferguson said the nomination was submitted by property owners Sean Lundy and Carol Way in February 2017; Mr. Lundy could not attend the committee meeting due to a recent family death but had participated in HPC hearings and supports designation. Supervisor Aaron Peskin moved to send the nomination to the full Board with a recommendation, and the committee took that motion without objection.
The committee’s vote advances the landmark case to the full Board, where supervisors will review the staff record, HPC recommendation and any additional public comment before deciding whether to adopt the designation.
