Committee backs expansion of regional disaster employee support program

The Rules Committee voted to forward an ordinance that would expand San Francisco’s regional disaster employee support program to include Tuolumne, San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties so city employees regularly assigned there can access paid disaster leave.
The Rules Committee voted Oct. 28 to forward to the full Board an ordinance amending San Francisco’s administrative code to expand the regional disaster employee support program.
Mauve Tobenio, chief of policy at the Department of Human Resources, told the committee the program — originally passed in 2018 after the North Bay fires of October 2017 — provides up to 80 hours of paid release time for employees significantly harmed by a regional disaster declared by the mayor. Tobenio said the department requests adding Tuolumne, San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties to the program’s defined region because city-owned water and power facilities and other worksites are located there and several employees stationed at those facilities could not access the benefit during recent fires.
Tobenio said roughly five to 10 employees were affected by the August 2020 fires and urged the committee to forward the ordinance as a committee report. Chair Ronan and Supervisors moved and approved the item by roll call; the committee’s vote was recorded as ‘‘aye’’ by Supervisors Stephanie, Marr and Chair Ronan and the motion passed without objection.
The ordinance will be transmitted to the full Board for consideration as a committee report.
