Rules Committee forwards John L. Burton nomination to Port Commission

San Francisco’s Rules Committee on Oct. 28 voted to forward Mayor London Breed’s nomination of John L. Burton to the Port Commission to the full Board of Supervisors with a positive recommendation.
Senator John L. Burton thanked the committee for the appointment and described his interest in helping the port become more economically self-sustaining as tourism and restaurant revenues have fallen during the COVID-19 pandemic. ‘‘The port does not receive a lot from the general budget. It’s got to be self sustaining,’’ Burton said, noting the shift of shipping to other Bay Area ports and the waterfront’s evolving role.
Committee members praised Burton’s decades of public service. Chair Ronan said Burton’s reputation ‘‘precedes you,’’ and Supervisor Stephanie called him ‘‘legendary’’ and cited his role in returning control of the waterfront to the city through the Burton Act. The committee amended a procedural line in the motion to remove the word ‘‘rejecting’’ throughout the legislation before proceeding.
A roll call vote recorded Supervisors Stephanie, Marr, and Chair Ronan as voting ‘‘aye,’’ and the motion passed without objection. The nomination will now go to the full Board of Supervisors for final consideration.
No public callers remained in the queue when the committee opened public comment on the item.
Procedural note: the committee’s action was a forwarding recommendation; it does not itself appoint the nominee. The full Board must take a final vote to confirm the appointment.
