Committee backs sidewalk‑width adjustments around First, Mission and Fremont streets

The committee advanced an ordinance, sponsored by Supervisor Kim’s office, to modify official sidewalk widths on segments of First Street, Mission Street and Fremont Street in the Southeast Mission. Staff explained the ordinance follows Public Works Order No. 185948 and alters existing widths — for example, widening a section of Fremont from about 15 to 21 feet and narrowing a section of Mission from 15 to 10 feet where an existing condition makes that appropriate. The legislation also creates a new sidewalk bulb‑out at the east corner of First and Mission to improve pedestrian safety.
Staff said the property submitted its street improvement permit in late 2013 and the change is intended to conclude long‑running construction impacts and energize the area with new office space. Committee members asked for clearer short titles on future agenda packets to make sidewalk changes easier for the public to parse. The motion to send the item forward to the full board passed without objection.
