Board committee redesignates Edgewood Center as youth evaluation and treatment facility

The Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee unanimously moved forward a resolution to redesignate Edgewood Center for Children and Families as an evaluation and treatment facility for youth ages 5 to 17, correcting administrative designation numbers in the prior paperwork.
Ken Epstein of the Department of Public Health told the committee the change corrects a minor designation-number error and asked supervisors to redesignate the CSU stabilization facility as a "5,150 designated unit." Epstein said the department is prepared to answer technical questions about the designation.
Supervisor Julie Christiansen, who said the issue is personally meaningful, described the local need for youth psychiatric treatment and noted that without a San Francisco facility some families must travel outside the city to obtain care. The Youth Commission reviewed the resolution at its Nov. 16 meeting and signaled strong support, Chair Eric Marr said.
There was brief public comment in favor and no objections from the committee. The committee accepted the resolution and a positive recommendation will be forwarded to the full Board of Supervisors.
