Committee hears alternatives to Prop J food contract; Laguna Honda option not ready by January

Staff and budget office representatives said preliminary work with Laguna Honda found different nutritional mandates for probationers versus Laguna Honda residents and uncertainty about kitchen capacity, storage and menu preparation schedules. Laguna Honda's new kitchen is not yet operational and the hospital staff said it would be difficult to operationalize an additional population by January. Preliminary cost differentials were unknown; the controller's office noted the six‑month savings earlier reported for Prop J was about $148,000 and roughly $300,000 on an annualized basis but that the full differential versus Laguna Honda had not been estimated.
The committee agreed to consider Prop J on the following Monday and requested that departments continue to evaluate the Laguna Honda option, transportation differentials and transition costs before making a final decision.
