City accepts $1 million DOE grant to kick-start electric vehicle charging network

San Francisco — The Budget & Finance Subcommittee voted to forward a resolution authorizing the Department of the Environment to accept and expend a $1,000,000 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to support the San Francisco Electric Vehicle Initiative.
Acting Environment Director David Osman said the grant will fund roughly 60 public chargers in 22 garages, enable curbside charging, provide rebates for residential charging-permit fees and support demonstration projects in multifamily buildings. Osman also said the grant will fund a pilot battery-switch station for taxis and allow expansion of the city fleet’s electric vehicles.
Osman told the committee the grant requires a local match; the department identified about $1.2 million in other grants and incentives to meet that match. He confirmed two grant-funded positions would be added and expire when the funding ends.
Supervisors praised the department’s success in bringing federal funds into the city and asked about staffing and the status of the department’s director appointment; Osman said the mayor’s office is making the director selection and the commission’s recommendations have been forwarded.
The subcommittee forwarded the grant acceptance to the full board with recommendation without objection.
