Rules Committee forwards ordinance to name City Hall rotunda for Buck Delventhal

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors’ Rules Committee on Jan. 27, 2020 forwarded to the full Board an ordinance to name the Second Floor Rotunda in City Hall for former Deputy City Attorney Buck Delventhal.
City Attorney Dennis Herrera told the committee that Delventhal was “not just our colleague, an incredible mentor, but an incredible friend and teacher.” Herrera said he had learned from Delventhal during his 18 years in office and described the naming as “a fitting tribute” to Delventhal’s career and character.
Supervisor Erin Peskin proposed two small textual edits to the ordinance — adding an apostrophe and inserting the words “of California” after a reference to the County Councils Association — that the committee incorporated. After an initial procedural vote was rescinded to allow for public comment, a speaker from the South End spoke in favor of the naming. Supervisor Stephanie then moved the ordinance, as amended, to the full Board with a positive recommendation; the committee approved the motion without objection.
The ordinance is being advanced as an ordinance (rather than the more common resolution) because sponsors said Delventhal’s long service to the city warranted the higher formality. The measure will appear on the supervisors’ agenda on Feb. 4 unless otherwise noted.
