Committee narrows arcade zoning change to one SoMa industrial district
Summary

The Land Use & Transportation Committee took up an ordinance to amend the Planning Code to allow amusement arcades in certain South of Market and Eastern neighborhoods mixed‑use districts while continuing to prohibit them in residential enclave districts. April Veneracion, from Supervisor Jane Kim’s office, explained that the legislation was amended to remove the prohibition only for the SoMa Service Light Industrial District rather than across all South of Market and Eastern districts.
Committee members reviewed the redlined language and discussed the limited scope; a brief public comment period included local business representatives who supported the change as an opportunity for neighborhood vibrancy. Supervisor Katie Tang moved the amendments and Supervisor Aaron Peskin seconded; the committee took the amendments forward to the full Board with a positive recommendation without objection.
Because the change was narrowed in committee, the final text and any zoning-control-table edits will appear in the ordinance transmitted to the Board. The committee’s recommendation advances the item for formal Board consideration.
