Rules Committee recommends Allen Cooper for Commission on Aging seat

The Rules Committee voted Wednesday to forward Allen Cooper’s nomination to the full Board of Supervisors with a positive recommendation for a seat on the Commission on Aging Advisory Council.
Cooper told the committee he spent about 38 years at Stanford, focused clinically on liver disease and the intersection of substance abuse and medical care, then moved into safety-net medicine with work at Haight Ashbury Clinic and the Treasure Island clinic. He described volunteer work and collaboration with organizations such as Senior Disability Action and participation at MSC South clinic. Cooper said his early months on the commission would be spent learning the commission’s work and finding areas where his medical perspective could contribute.
"My main job, for the first months will obviously be to learn about what they do and how they do it," Cooper said, describing a background that includes primary-care work with vulnerable populations and service on local initiatives.
Public comment included a statement from David Elliott Lewis of Senior Disability Action and the Tenderloin People’s Congress, who said he had worked with Cooper and called him a "measured and quiet voice" and "a great perspective" for the commission.
A committee member moved to forward Item 1 with a positive recommendation to the full board; Chair Ronan announced the motion passed without objection and congratulated Cooper. The full Board will consider the appointment at a later meeting.
