Supervisor Aaron Peskin presented narrow amendments to an ordinance that would allow limited infill of up to 1,500 square feet on terraces of noncomplying structures designated as significant under Planning Code Article 11 in the C-3 district, aimed specifically at 495 Geary (the Clift Hotel). Planning and Historic Preservation commissions recommended three changes: (1) restrict the ordinance to the specific assessor block containing the Clift Hotel; (2) delete one proposed finding the commissions deemed unnecessary; and (3) include a two-year sunset and language allowing the publisher to remove the language without amending the code.
Planning Department staff described the infill as requiring a major alteration permit and subject to Historic Preservation Commission review and approval. The committee accepted the amendments and, without objection, sent the amended ordinance to the full Board for consideration at the first meeting of the new year.
