Committee forwards resolution to name Bernal Heights right-of-way for surveyor Martin Ron

Supervisor Malia Cohen’s Land Use and Transportation Committee forwarded a resolution to the full Board of Supervisors to name an unnamed city right-of-way in Bernal Heights for land surveyor Martin Ron.
The Department of Public Works’ Javier Rivera told the committee the segment is part of the Brewster Street Extension project and is DPW property with no residences, so naming it would not change any household addresses or have direct economic impacts for local residents. Rivera said the project is nearing completion and that Mr. Ron’s surveying firm, founded in 1968, has been involved in many San Francisco projects.
Several neighbors testified in opposition during the public-comment period. Mary Nennig said notice of the naming was limited to two lamppost notices and that neighbors regard the area as part of Brewster Street; she and others worried adding a new name would confuse delivery drivers and merchants. Perry Nenig, who said his house fronts the section, urged the committee to leave local usage unchanged.
Supervisor Paskin suggested adding transitional signage — for example, “Martin M Ron Street (Brewster)” — to reduce confusion. DPW said the department could include the existing name on signs during a transition period. After discussion and reopened public comment, the committee voted to forward the resolution with a favorable recommendation; the motion passed without objection.
The matter will next appear on the Board of Supervisors agenda for final action.
